Essential Functions:

The Aviation Professional Services Solutions Architect is a customer facing position that leads in the creation of a solution architecture using multiple products, applications and/or systems in the Aviation domain (OPS/NAV/CREW) in support of Jeppesen's customer(s) solutions. 

 

Fits a proposed customer solution architecture within the overall Jeppesen enterprise and Aviation business architecture and escalates issues that affect enterprise architecture.  Makes trade-offs across candidate architectures and designs the architecture to accomplish cross-system objectives such as re-use, integration, efficiencies and consistency.  Utilizes system engineering concepts and techniques to evaluate the completeness and correctness of the Aviation solution architecture.  Ensures systems and interfaces are well-defined and exhibit desired architectural behaviors.  Prepares architecture documents and technical papers documenting and advocating the decisions affecting the architecture of multiple systems.  Advises on product strategy for the Aviation solution portfolio.  Investigates new technologies and product opportunities that could be used to generate competitive advantage.  Identifies business and technology trends and evaluates their impact on the solution.  When needed, has technical skills to function as technical architect on a system implementation.  Mentors technical architects and senior developers.  Reports potential intellectual property and resolve its disposition with corporate intellectual property process and supports the Enterprise Architect in corporate governance related activities.  Supports the technical and cost responses to customer solicited and unsolicited proposals.  Author and present technical white papers on solution architectures.

 

Education/Experience:

A successful professional in this position will draw on comprehensive, practical experience and knowledge to provide leadership in the architecture domain.  All degree criteria below are for degrees in a technical field such as engineering or computer science.  All experience ranges below are for experience in the software industry, preferably in software engineering.

 

Require a bachelor's degree and 10 to 15 years of experience or a master's degree with 5 to 10 years of experience or a doctorate with 5 to 10 years experience.

 

In addition, practical experience and knowledge in commercial and/or military aviation operations is strongly desirable.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required as minimums for this position.

 

Demonstrated ability to:

·          Collaborate with key Jeppesen, industry, partner and customer stakeholders to determine key business needs and develop architecture of customer solutions

·          Apply system engineering concepts and techniques to define a system of systems

o         Develop the highest level of system requirements to meet customer requirements

o         Create a clearly defined system with explicit external interfaces constructed from components with efficient internal interfaces

o         Determine the mix of manual, software, and hardware functions to implement the system making maximum use of Jeppesen products or already developed components

o         Demonstrate that the system is consistent, complete, correct, operationally defined, and fully meets the customer objectives

·          Apply software engineering concepts and techniques to develop software and system architecture

·          Lead an architecture domain from inception through implementation of large, complex systems

·          Provide focus and support productivity and direction in difficult situations and challenging scenarios

·          Define and lead effective problem solving approaches

·          Coach and mentor other architects and other software engineering resources

·          Effectively document and present technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences at all levels of the organization

·          Facilitate meetings and generative design sessions for timely and effective decision making

·          Influence stakeholders to reach balanced outcomes across multiple disciplines and domain spaces

·          Participate in proposal teams and be responsible for the creation and documentation of a solution architecture to meet the needs of a customer request for proposal/information

 

Extensive knowledge and demonstrated ability with software methodologies, processes, and modeling based upon:

·          Iterative software lifecycle development methodologies (e.g., Rational Unified Process (RUP) and other agile methodologies)

·          Object oriented analysis and design, design patterns, architectural patterns, and architecture principles

·          Enterprise architecture structures such as security, identity management, and infrastructure standards and communications protocols.

·          Unified Modeling Language (UML)

 

Knowledge, technical foundation, and demonstrated ability in the design and implementation of:

·          Multi-tier, distributed, and service oriented architectures

 

The knowledge, skills and abilities below are highly desired by Jeppesen for this position.

 

Extensive knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in the commercial and military aviation industry including:

·          Airline operations

·          Dispatch

·          Crew/Aircraft scheduling

·          Flight Deck environment

·          Navigation data

·          Back office systems

 

Extensive knowledge and demonstrated ability with software methodologies, processes, and modeling based upon:

·          Application and web server, hardware, and network systems

·          Data modeling (relational, object)

·          Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN)

 

Extensive knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in the following technologies:

·          J2EE platform and related frameworks

·          Java, C/C++/C#, XML, HTML

·          SQL

·          Experience with certified systems

 

The following knowledge, skills and abilities are optional, but will enhance Jeppesen's consideration of the candidate.

 

Knowledge, technical foundation, and demonstrated ability in the design and implementation of:

·          Systems that manage Aviation information including:

o         presentation

o         business logic and

o         repository layers of these systems

·          Communications protocols

·          Embedded systems
